Dresden is considered the heart of the European semiconductor industry. Together with the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and its spin-off, HZDR Innovation GmbH, Hi-Acts specifically strengthens the transfer of deep-tech innovations into industry. At the Ion Beam Center, scientists are working on developing the next generation of power chips – smaller, faster, and more efficient. These chips form the backbone of turbines, trains, and critical infrastructures, making them an indispensable building block for Europe’s technological sovereignty.
Precision through Ion Implantation
A key technology used at the Ion Beam Center is ion implantation. Foreign atoms are introduced into semiconductors, especially silicon, with the highest precision. Ions generated in a high vacuum are accelerated to very high speeds and directed onto the wafer surface. The special feature: both penetration depth and the number of ions can be precisely controlled, allowing the properties of the semiconductors to be adjusted with exceptional accuracy.
From Research to Application
HZDR Innovation GmbH, a spin-off of HZDR and an industrial partner of Hi-Acts, makes these cutting-edge technologies accessible to industry. With a capacity of up to two million wafers per year, the company offers scalable high-tech services – without industrial partners needing to invest in their own costly infrastructure.
Focus on Efficiency and Reliability
Within the Hi-Acts platform, another key focus lies on optimizing accelerator processes. Proactive maintenance strategies and continuous performance improvements increase system stability and facility availability. The result: greater supply chain reliability and improved planning security for industry partners.
Hi-Acts as an Innovation Accelerator
Hi-Acts aims to enable companies in the semiconductor sector to innovate faster. By providing access to world-leading accelerator technologies and profound deep-tech expertise, solutions are being developed here in Dresden that strengthen Europe’s position in global competition.
