At the roundtable on biotechnology in Northern Germany, experts from research, business, and investment came together to discuss the region's opportunities and challenges. Participants such as Dr. Sabine Brock (DESY), Prof. Dr. Søren W. Gersting (iniuiva), and Jan Phillip Denkers (Life Science Nord) emphasized the growing importance of interdisciplinary networks and new technologies to drive innovation forward.

Dr. Brock highlighted that DESY in Hamburg, with the X-ray light source PETRA III, offers a unique locational advantage that accelerates preclinical research and attracts international collaborations. Prof. Gersting underscored the significance of X-ray crystallography for drug development, while Jan Phillip Denkers described the Life Science Nord cluster as a central platform for connecting stakeholders.

A key topic at the roundtable was the increasing relevance of digitalization and artificial intelligence (AI) in biotechnology. Hans Vanhooren from Indivumed Therapeutics explained how AI is used to efficiently process large datasets and discover new therapeutic approaches. Dr. Dirk Winkler from Evotec stressed the necessity of high-quality data to ensure the success of AI-driven developments.

In addition to technological aspects, the issue of funding opportunities also played a role. Claas H. Nieraad from the Baltic Business Angels emphasized the importance of private investments and long-term partnerships to support biotech startups.

The experts agreed that the North has significant potential as a biotech region, which can be further expanded through targeted networking, new business models, and closer collaboration.

The roundtable demonstrated the strength of the northern German biotech landscape and showcased how cooperation between research, industry, and investors can realize groundbreaking innovations in the life sciences sector.
